Oregon Management Internship

The online application is coming soon for Summer 2009.

Guidelines for creating your personal statement and resume for the 2009 Oregon Management Internship program:

Prepare and upload a personal statement and resume (one page each).  This should be a two-page document—personal statement on page 1; resume on page 2.  Save document as a Word, Rich Text Format (RTF), or PDF file. Send as an attachment to omi@oregonmi.org.

Please note that participation is limited to full-time Juniors, Seniors, and graduate students (during 2008-09) who attend a member institution of the Oregon Independent College Foundation: Concordia University, George Fox University, Lewis and Clark College, Linfield College, Marylhurst University, Pacific University, Reed College, University of Portland, Warner Pacific College and Willamette University.

PERSONAL STATEMENT GUIDELINES:

Your personal statement (cover letter) should be addressed to:

            Selection Committee
            Oregon Management Internship
            P.O. Box 23
            Marylhurst, OR 97036-0023

The content of the letter should tie in closely with your “elevator speech” about who you are and what you hope to achieve via a professional internship opportunity.  The leading question that you want to build your personal statement around is, “Can you tell me a little about yourself?”

As the OMI program reaches a broad audience of potential intern sponsors, we cannot guarantee placement within a specific organization.  However, we can direct candidates to certain types of organizations or industry clusters based on your professional interests.  Please state your preferences (no more than two) to pursue opportunities in: 1) marketing, 2) human resources, 3) finance & accounting, 4) project management, or 5) science and engineering,

It will be highly beneficial if you can zone in on a specific professional interest (even if you are not entirely sure it is what you would like to do as a career)—corporate partners are looking for specific preferences.  See www.oregonclusters.org for more information about regional business clusters.

Your personal statement should also highlight the most important and relevant accomplishments, experience listed in your resume, and your core strengths (i.e., what you have to offer an employer).

RESUME GUIDELINES:

Your resume is a brief summary of your abilities, education, work and volunteer experience, and skills.  Please keep it to one page as part of your OMI application.  Tips to organize your resume effectively:

PERSONAL INFORMATION: Top center of page. Name, address, phone, and email.  Just below your contact information, you may want to consider including a sentence that reflects your personal career objective.

EDUCATION: Often comes first in student resumes, especially if it is a strong asset. Include year, major/minor, and, if desired, GPA (many employers give first preference to students with a high GPA).

EXPERIENCE: Here, you can use one of two formats:

Functional: To emphasize skills and talents, cluster your experience under headings that highlight these skills.  For example: leadership, research, computers, etc.  This format can be helpful if you have little relevant job experience.

Chronological: To emphasize work experience, list jobs beginning with the most recent. Some hints:

•      Write all job descriptions in parallel phrases, using ACTION verbs

•      List the most important responsibilities or successes first

•      List similar tasks together

•      Emphasize collaborative or group-related tasks

AWARDS/HONORS: Use reverse chronological order; include titles, places, dates.
